Bashibazouk vol. II

The Empire Project

November 21 2013- January 11 2014

The Empire Project presents the second edition of the “Bashibazouk” exhibitions from November 21, 2013, to January 11, 2014. The exhibition features works by four different artists across various mediums, from sculpture to digital design. Banu Birecikligil, Can Pekdemir, Filippos Tsitsopoulos, and Sena.

“Bashibazouk” takes its name from a term describing an alternative form of recruitment in the Ottoman army, where irregular soldiers served as scouts to disrupt the stability of the opposing army during war, until they were disbanded in the 19th century due to their destructive behavior. The artists in this exhibition were selected for the rebellious, exploratory, and risk-taking nature of their work, aiming to revisit the concept as a satire on the human condition in contemporary culture.
